The Cambridge Analytica scandal and the resulting changes in online platform policies have drastically changed the approach to digital research in the social sciences. When the access-to-data has become a relevant issue for different stakeholders, a specific issue network has emerged, favouring a possible paradigm change in the digital policy. In this sense, the Digital Services Act EU Regulation Article 40 has marked a relevant turning point. This paper will give an overview about the relationship between digital research and online platforms, even looking at the establishment of a specific issue network, and is finally going to discuss some practical problems of this recent provision, arising questions and regulatory issues from a digital sociology view.
