L’obiettivo di questo saggio è quello di proporre una riflessione sui sentimenti di pudore e vergogna, facendo dialogare alcuni classici della sociologia con la prosa di Arthur Schnitzler. Necessaria premessa è l’idea che la letteratura è un’importante fonte per l’analisi sociologica, perché può suscitare la teoria, oppure confermare, arricchire o chiarire ciò che il sociologo ha teorizzato. In particolare, l’analisi mette in relazione testi diversi: da un lato, due note novelle dello scrittore austriaco ( Il ritorno di Casanova e La signorina Else ); dall’altro lato, alcuni lavori di Norbert Elias e Max Scheler, i quali hanno avuto un ruolo fondamentale nella storia della sociologia dei sentimenti e delle emozioni.
The aim of this paper is to propose a reflection about feelings of shyness and shame, making some classics of sociology dialogue with the prose of Arthur Schnitzler. A necessary conceptual premise is the idea that literature is an important source for sociological analysis because it can stimulate the theory, or confirm, enrich, or clarify what the sociologist has theorised. Specifically, the analysis puts in relation different texts: on one side, two renown novels by the Austrian writer (Casanova’s Homecoming and Miss Else); on the other side, some works by Norbert Elias and Max Scheler, that had a fundamental role in the history of the sociology of feelings and emotions.
