Traendo spunto da ricerche su emotional labour e burnout nell’ambito delle professioni d’aiuto e delle procedure d’asilo, l’obiettivo di questo articolo è di esplorare le esperienze emozionali degli operatori che lavorano nel contesto dei centri di detenzione amministrativa per stranieri irregolari in Italia. Attraverso un approccio di ricerca qualitativo, si sono volute ricercare quelle esperienze che potessero essere indicative di disagio ed erosione empatica per individuare, attraverso cinque interviste semi-strutturate, alcune tra le strategie difensive e le reazioni emotive che gli operatori, talvolta inconsciamente, mettono in atto allo scopo di tutelarsi da eccessivi carichi empatici e vissuti particolarmente angoscianti derivati dalla loro esperienza lavorativa.
This paper draws on ethnographic research conducted in Italy with caseworkers and members of staff working with irregu-lar migrants in administrative detention facilities. By approaching the effects of migration from the point of view of case-workers, the aim of this paper is to analyse the emotional experiences of those working in difficult settings where structural violence and anxiety are pervasive (as is the case of the Italian removal centres) and explore broader questions in relation to the psychological and emotional toll of «frontline work» with an often traumatized and vulnerable population. In many cases, caseworkers and staff members receive little or no supervision, and it is not uncommon for them to suffer from compassion fatigue, burnout or other mental health issues as a consequence of the coping strategies and defensive re-sponses that they, often unwillingly, put in place.
