This foreword illustrates the framework of scientific cooperation between the sociological associations of Southern Europe, within which the focus section of this edition is placed. Sociologia Italiana, the journal of the Italian Sociological Association, Sociology On Line, the journal of the Portuguese Association of Sociology, and RES-Revista Española de Sociología, the journal of the Spanish Federation of Sociology, have launched a joint call for papers on the topic «Connecting sociological research with social problems and public policies: implications for Southern European societies», aimed at exploring issues that are particularly significant for Southern European societies, such as changes in the welfare state, work and employment, education, migration, social cohesion and political participation. Sociologia Italiana has selected six of the papers submitted: five are presented in this focus section and one in the Theory and Research section.

è professore ordinario presso il Dipartimento di Filosofia e Scienze dell’Educazione dell’Università di Torino; insegna Sociologia generale e Sociologia della scienza. Ha indirizzato l’attività scientifica nei seguenti settori: teoria dell’azione e dell’attore sociale; sociologia del corpo; comprensione pubblica della scienza e della tecnologia; sociologia generale e teoria delle classi sociali.
