Amicizia e intimità, specie se declinati al maschile, sono temi forse poco frequentati dalla riflessione sociologica, ma non per questo non concorrono a dischiudere orizzonti di significato innovativi ed originali, specie nell’ambito dei men’s studies. L’obiettivo del presente contributo è di esplorare alcune dinamiche di trasformazione dell’intimità maschile attraverso il punto di vista delle relazioni amicali narrate nell’esperienza di alcuni giovani maschi. A una prima sezione teorica che cercherà di focalizzare il dibattito classico e contemporaneo in tema di maschilità e di amicizia, seguirà una sezione empirica, frutto di una ricerca pluriennale sulle trasformazioni delle rappresentazioni della maschilità nella società contemporanea. Come si cercherà di mettere in evidenza, le relazioni amicali sono ampiamente condizionate da aspettative e stereotipi di genere; tuttavia, a fianco di indiscutibili resistenze, è possibile identificare piccole, lente, ma significative rivoluzioni nella rappresentazione e nelle pratiche maschili.
Man’s best friend? The changing representations of close relationships on the panorama of contemporary masculinity
It can be argued that friendship and close relationships, in particular those of men, have been neglected by sociological investigation. Yet they open innovative and original horizons of meaning, most of all within the field of men’s studies. This paper sets out to explore the changing dynamics of men’s relationships by focusing on friendship, drawing on the accounts of a number of young men. The first section looks at theory, examining classical and contemporary debate on masculinity and friendship, followed by an empirical section showing the results of a long-term study on the changing representations of masculinity in contemporary society. As we will attempt to highlight, friendship relationships are broadly influenced by gender expectations and stereotypes; nevertheless, while there is indisputable resistance, it is possible to identify small, slow, but meaningful revolutions in the representation and practices of men.
