In risposta all’affermarsi storico della variable-based sociology , Herbert Blumer definì un programma intellettuale che si sarebbe realizzato in diverse manifestazioni successive, dalla sociologia post-positivista e post-strutturalista a una metodologia di grande successo, come la grounded theory . In questo articolo, analizzeremo, in particolare, come Andrew Abbott, nei suoi saggi metodologici, ha risposto alle sollecitazioni di Blumer, prima decostruendo gli assunti del positivismo ingenuo, quindi pervenendo a un approccio narrativista; infine, proponendo una nuova forma di sociologia detta lirica . Il confronto fra i due autori permetterà di discutere alcuni assunti dell’interazionismo simbolico e di mettere in evidenza l’attualità dei metodi sviluppati dalla scuola di Chicago.
From variables to lyrical sociology: methodological approaches from Blumer to Abbott
In response to the emergence of variable-based sociology , Herbert Blumer formulated an intellectual programme destined to produce various subsequent manifestations, from post-positivist to post-structuralist sociology to the greatly successful methodology of grounded theory . The article analyses Andrew Abbott’s methodological essays in response to Blumer’s ideas, which deconstruct the assumptions of naive positivism, coming to favour a narrativist approach and lastly arriving at a new form of sociology, termed lyrical. The comparison between the two authors is an opportunity to discuss a number of assumptions of symbolic interactionism and highlight the topical nature of the methods developed by the Chicago school.
