Il saggio analizza il difficile rapporto tra concetti e rappresentazioni pittoriche, cercando di proporre alcune modalità attraverso cui la sociologia può ricorrere alla pittura come stimolo teorico e come fonte di riflessione sul mondo sociale. L’opera pittorica può quindi essere non solo un oggetto di analisi per il sociologo (come nella tradizione della sociologia dell’arte) ma anche una risorsa e una fonte di dati. Partendo da queste premesse, vengono proposti alcuni esempi di utilizzo di opere pittoriche nella ricerca sociale e nella riflessione teorica. Nella parte finale, il saggio si concentra su alcune opere di Vincent van Gogh e sulla loro possibile interpretazione, utilizzando il concetto di risonanza così come definito da Hartmut Rosa.

This essay analyzes the complex relationship between concepts and pictorial representations and proposes ways in which sociology can use paintings as a theoretical stimulus and as a source of reflection on the social world. It argues that paintings should not be regarded merely as objects of sociological observation (as is typical in the sociology of art), but also as tools for sociological research and as data sources in their own right. The paper presents examples of how paintings have been used in social research and theoretical reflection. In the final section, it focuses on selected works by Vincent van Gogh and explores how they might be interpreted through Hartmut Rosa’s concept of resonance.
