L’età assiale è un periodo storico che va dall’800 al 200 a.C., in cui ogni civiltà ha posto le basi della sua diversificazione. Questo periodo è stato analizzato, con maggior enfasi, da Karl Jaspers nei testi Origine e senso della storia (1949) e i Grandi Filosofi (1957), in cui ha coniato per la prima volta il termine Achsenzeit (Età Assiale), a indicare, metaforicamente, la rotazione delle civiltà dal loro, precedente, punto di stabilità. Questo contributo verte, in particolare, sul dibattito contemporaneo riguardo l’età assiale, messo in luce da vari studiosi tra cui: Shmuel Eisenstadt, Bjorn Wittrock, Charles Taylor, Jan Assmann, Robert Bellah, Hans Joas, Karen Armstrong e Gore Vidal. In questi autori, emerge, in maniera peculiare e sempre diversa, un interesse specifico per il dialogo tra le civiltà, e per comprendere la portata effettiva del concetto analizzato da Jaspers.
Axial Age. The current debate on exchange and origin of civilizations
The Axial Age is a historical turning point from 800 B.C. to 200 B.C. when all civilizations irreversibly changed course. The term Achsenzeit (Axial Age) was first used by the German philosopher Karl Jaspers, in his books The Origin and Goal of History (1949), and The Great Philosophers (1957), based on a unitary vision of global history. Axial rotation is also a metaphor for the way in which civilizations ‘rotated’ from a fixed equilibrium to a new era characterized by great diversification. The paper focuses on contemporary debate on the Axial Age pursued by a number of authors: Shmuel Eisenstadt, Bjorn Wittrock, Charles Taylor, Jan Assmann, Robert Bellah, Hans Joas, Karen Armstrong and Gore Vidal. The main focus is the opportunity of forging dialogue with different civilizations in order to highlight Jaspers’ theory.
